CHS Art Club Visits Columbus Museum of Art

On October 8, 2014 forty-one Circleville High School Art Club members and their advisor, Mr. Robert Wright, visited the Columbus Museum of Art, courtesy of the Circleville City School Foundation’s Gasper Learning Fund.2

The theme of this year’s CMA educational program was “Sleuth”. During the museum tour the students were asked to be sleuths by observing, describing, interpreting and looking for proof in the artwork they viewed. The students viewed original works of art by famous artists Edward Hopper, Jackson Pollack, Picasso, Monet, Renoir, and Andy Warhol, to name a few. Identifying various artists’ styles and techniques, such as, realism, cubism, social commentary subjects, symbolism, perspective and use of whimsical subject matter led to interesting discussions among the students and docents. The traveling exhibit, “In ____  We Trust”, centered around the subject of money.  This exhibit challenged the students to think about what’s included in each piece of art and why it’s there.4

The students put their talents to work in the CMA studio. Groups of two, three or four students collaborated on a pumpkin creation.  With one medium-sized and two smaller pumpkins as their starting point each group was given the task of combining the pumpkins, creating a face and incorporating a fairy tale into their creation.  Using wooden skewers, duct tape, aluminum foil, markers, wire and other odds and ends the students’ creations gradually took shape as Rapunzel, Cinderella’s carriage, a pirate, Minotaur, Batman and Elsa from “Frozen”.  Students were encouraged to enter their creations in the arts and crafts category at Pumpkin Show.

Circleville City School Foundation was pleased to sponsor this art appreciation/enrichment opportunity for the CHS Art Club students at the Columbus Museum of Art and looks forward to offering this experience to another group of Circleville City School students next fall5.
