Steve Spicer, local artist and CHS graduate, created this intricately designed linoleum block print. This linoleum is the kind used on ship floors. First, Steve draws the picture on paper, transfers it to the linoleum with tracing paper, then begins the process of cutting away the linoleum. It is a reverse process, so as you look at the parts of Steve’s picture that have been painted, those areas were cut out and the black areas were not. When the ink is rolled onto the linoleum it adheres to the parts that have not been cut away. When the art paper is pulled off the linoleum it is black and white. The white is the area that was cut away, and the black is the untouched area. When the ink is dry, water colors are used. The frame is handcrafted by this talented artist.
